2007 was a successful year for us.
After coming second in the Northern Ireland Pharmacy awards in 2005 and 2006, we achieved 2 awards.
Accepting the award for Innovation and Change in Pharmacy Practice, Kate McClelland credited the whole team for their enthusiasm in embracing the changes in the IT system that installed in 2006.
Training completed, migration of the systems onto the new hardware and several months of getting to know the improvements has paid off with better account management, improved prescription data management and reduced paper mountains. The latter so much that we have now been able to halve the waste we produce and our bin is collected every fortnight rather than every week.
A special thanks to the family of guinea pigs who use our shredded paper as bedding.
The second award was to Amanda Sherry for Pharmacy Technician of the Year. Amanda has continued with her training and is now a qualified checking technician. This was the first year technicians were recognised in the award ceremony and competition was hard but Amanda triumphed for her work in the dispensary and her consultations with patients as part of the medicines management scheme.
The village of Maghaberry expanded rapidly in the early 1990’s. The Community Association feared the consequences of further expansion without service development.
In 1992, supported by the Community Association, Dr Kate McClelland sought permission from the Health Board to open a Community Pharmacy to serve the village.
The pharmacy opened in 1993, with the support of the community.
In 1997, Maghaberry Pharmacy was awarded ‘Best Independent Pharmacy of the Year’, putting the pharmacy and the village on the map.
Maghaberry Pharmacy has built relationships with all of the local doctor’s practices as there is no surgery in the village. Patient choice of doctor is therefore extensive and the pharmacy is known for its quality service to the people of Maghaberry.
Working with the Community Association, the pharmacy was instrumental in starting the 'Friday Morning Club' with funding from the Building Community-Pharmacy Partnership. This has developed and there are now several small groups meeting in the village with health and social care as their core values.
In 2006, an extensive refit was completed, extending the dispensary to cope with the increased prescription business and service development. This has improved the flow of work and allowed further service expansion into Repeat Dispensing and Minor Ailments Schemes.
This Website is part of the development of the business and we welcome comments on this and our other services.
