Lap the Lough

After just a few months of cycling to work (4 and 5 miles some days) it is amazing Amanda and Kate were fit enough to Lap the Lough, 81 miles.
Kate did a bit of extra training over 3 weekends but Amanda succeeded in just 6 hours with only cycling to work and some recreational cycling.
Having decided to do this we were going to keep it quiet but Lesley Crowe, a volunteer for the charity Pretty n Pink, happened to mention the difficulty of fund raising in the current economic climate so we said, "Ok, we'll Lap the Lough for you!"
A little about Pretty n Pink
Pretty n Pink is a local Northern Ireland breast cancer charity (www.prettynpink.org), founded by Noleen Adair following her own breast and other cancers. It aims to help people cope with cancer, particularly breast cancer, a devastating diagnosis for young and older women.
The charity is based in Belfast and has 3 simple aims:
- Create awareness of Breast Cancer in Northern Ireland especially in young women.
- Provide funds for patients who do not meet the criteria for any other public or charitable funding.
- Improve quality of life of Breast Cancer patients and their families in the best way we can.
81 cycling miles later we were fitter and managed to raise £467.00 for the charity.
Thank You to all the customers who supported us and made sure we had to succeed.
And the health messages?
Anyone can get fit with only a little regular cycling.
Helping people cope with a medical condition is the best we can do.
SUMMER STUDENT JOINS THE Maghaberry Team

In May 2011, Ciaran Donnelly joined the team at Maghaberry.
Ciaran is a first year student at John Moores University, Liverpool, studying for a pharmacy degree.
Ciaran is learning fast and says ?I am using the work we have done in Uni and adding practical experience. I am fortunate that at John Moores we learn some dispensing in first year. It is good to see how all the academic knowledge is relevant to the real work in community pharmacy.
"The team at Maghaberry are fun to work with and I am enjoying my time here"
Cycling to Work

Pharmacies are being encouraged to take a lead in the health of their communities. Integrating exercise into your daily routine is one of the best ways to get fit and stay fit.
Did you know that regular cyclists have fitness levels equivalent to 10 years younger than people of the same age who do not exercise. It?s not about cycling 50miles at breakneck speed. It is about deciding to cycle short journeys regularly. The Cycle Touring Club has a slogan ' Five Miles to Fabulous ' Five miles or less is the distance recommended to substitute the car for the bike.
Cycling has many health advantages, weight control, improves your heart and lungs, tones up your muscles, combats osteoporosis, gives a sense of wellbeing and helps to build a positive mental attitude. The big advantage for those who are overweight is that the bicycle carries your weight and is easier on the joints than jogging.
In April, Amanda and Kate started to cycle to work as many days as they can. You may have seen them on the roads. Amanda cycles from Ballinderry to Maghaberry five miles and loves it! Kate lives further away but with a folding bike in the back of the car she parks at an obliging customer's house and cycles the remaining 4 miles to the pharmacy.
The sun on your face, the wind in your hair in the morning makes you feel glad to be alive. In the evening, the stresses of the day melt away as you freewheel down the hills. Cycling is good for your health, your pocket and is as safe as walking.
Try it - you'll like it.

In her acceptance speech Kate said 'I just said yes to lots of interesting work' and encouraged all young pharmacists to look at opportunities as they present because 'you never know where a yes may take you.'
